Oxytocin and Bad Memories While the hormone oxytocin has generally been heralded as having a positive influence in social situations, recent research has pointed to its potential to embed negative social memories in those with social anxiety disorder. In this way, oxytocin may have the effect of causing emotional pain and could be the reason that stressful social situations stay with us long after the original eventâ€"and may even trigger future anxiety and fear. In a study published in the journal  Nature Neuroscience  in 2013, mice  with varying levels of oxytocin receptors (no receptors, increased receptors, normal level of receptors) in the brain were studied to examine the effects of fear and anxiety. In the first experiment, the mice were placed in a situation with aggressive mice in which they experienced social defeat, creating a stressful social situation. The mice who were missing the oxytocin receptors would not have had any oxytocin enter their brains. Six hours later, the researchers put the mice back with the aggressive mice. What they found was that the mice with no receptors showed no signs of fear. The mice with extra receptors show increased levels of fear. Finally, the mice with normal amounts of receptors showed a typical level of fear. In a second experiment, the researchers were able to show that oxytocin in a stressful social situation could even transfer fear into a situation that followed itâ€"in the case of the mice this was an electric shock. Again, the mice without receptors showed no signs or remembering to be afraid of the electric shock. In contrast, a study discussed in Scientific American  administered oxytocin into the noses of men. First, these men were shown a neutral stimulus (pictures of faces and houses) that were sometimes paired with an electric shock. Then, subjects either received a single dose of oxytocin or a placebo. Then, they underwent fear of extinction therapy while receiving MRI scans.  They were once again shown the photos, but without the pairing of the electric shock. What they found was that the subjects who received the oxytocin had increased activity in the prefrontal cortex (for controlling fear) and decreased responsiveness in the amygdala when shown the images. This suggested that a single dose of oxytocin was effective to enhance the use of extinction-based therapy for fear and anxiety. While these results (mice vs. men) may seem contradictory, this could relate to the timing of the oxytocin dose. Had the men who received oxytocin received it at the same time as the electric shock, would the memory of the shock have stuck with them longer? The answer to this issue is not clear. Oxytocin and Social Fears What does this research tell us about our own fear, anxiety, and their relation to bad memories? It appears that oxytocin may strengthen social memories in the brain (specifically, in the lateral septum), or have the effect of intensification or amplification. This is important since chronic social stress is known to cause anxiety and depression. This effect seems to also last a long timeâ€"at least six hours. This type of research also suggests that just as social anxiety appears to have a genetic component, it follows that your brains ability to access oxytocin might relate to how well you encode bad memories in social situations, such that they may make you afraid in the future. What to Do After a Bad Social Experience If past negative social events play a central role in social anxiety disorder, it makes sense that the elimination of memories of these events would help to lessen your anxiety: If you tend to have flashbacks or cringe attacks about shameful situations from the past, it may be helpful to keep a journal in which you record happy or positive events as well. Anytime you remember a negative memory, try to follow it up with a positive one.In response to flashbacks, you could also have a few phrases that you repeat to yourself, such as that event does not define me.You could also try to practice mindfulness when memories come back to you. Huffman trucking has implemented the following steps of the collaboration process that must be employed to achieve organizational goals. The action plan to implement the collaboration process is to create an important objective, build, sustain, or enhance a core competence or competitive advantage, important new market opportunities as well as mitigate significant risk to the trucking business. Facilitating the close cross-company by merger and acquisition strategies play a part in Huffman trucking. Expanding the company’s geographic coverage and independently developing whatever resources and know-how were needed to be successful was imperative. Huffman Trucking has facilities in four major cities in the United States, Cleveland, OH, Los Angeles, CA, St. Louis, MO, and Bayonne, NJ. In order for Huffman Trucking to be a successful business there had to be several things put into place. In order for Huffman Trucking to be able to achieve the mission and reach the vision for the company there had to be the use of collaborations within. Such collaborations would include lateral and vertical collaborations. Lateral collaboration is where a group of people with the same ranking work together to accomplish a task. An example of lateral collaboration would be if two or more of the floor employees work together to try and come up with a way to increase production. A vertical collaboration would occur when a person of higher rank works with a person of lower rank to accomplish a goal. The CEO of the company working with a floor shift manager to try to increase production would be an example of vertical collaboration. Looking on the service request page, there has been many requests for service made by different people. One request that was made was made by the CIO for a Windows server upgrade for all the network locations. The expected goal of this server upgrade is to provide a migration path from the current network to one running Windows Server 2008. An action plan will be put together in order to accomplish this goal. Vertical collaboration will be used as the CIO works together with the IT department in order to accomplish the task of upgrading the server. They will work together to make sure that the server upgrade allows Huffman Trucking to do everything that it needs to be successful such as the right domain model and network dministration for all sites. An action plan will then be put into effect for lateral collaboration. This will allow the front line staff to develop ways that the upgraded server can help them. Examples of that would be that Administrative control of domain controllers can be decentralized if needed and allows the drivers to have access to at least one computer at each site. Huffman Trucking takes great pride in their company not only for their employees and customers but also for their stakeholders. They are the making the deciding factors for each category that they are over. At the end of the day, each VP relies on another VP in order to proceed with their decisions. Good Night and Good Luck Essay During the film Good Night, and Good Luck, George Clooney and Grant Heslov express their concern of fear through acting stylisations, authentic footage imbedded within the film and effective choice of music and lyrics. A secondary idea presented by Clooney and Heslov includes initiating a visual sensation of time and place for the audience, with the use of film noir and effective employment of set design. The era of McCarthyism encompassed fear and concern, the acting and characterizations in Good Night, and Good Luck effectively conveyed this idea. The expression of the characters, in particular Ed Murrow, during the See It Now sequences, portrays expressions of grim anxiety. The dramatic acting in the film is abundant with prolonged eye contact and intense line delivery, combining the two to illuminate the fear of persecution and job loss. Furthermore, this is evident in the paranoid- filled dialogue in the scenes between Joe and Shirley Wershba as there is â€Å"a lot of pressure† upon their interaction, where their facial expressions are highlighted by close-up shots that position the audience to vividly depict their distress. This footage is then juxtaposed with the footage of Annie Mosss questioning, which depicts Moss as innocent and an easy target for McCarthy as she is ‘coloured’. Additionally, the environment surrounding the Moss trial can be seen as congested and a prime concern during that particular time. Not only can the real footage be seen as a primary source material but Clooney and Heslov used this technique as an opportunity to manipulate the audience to perceive McCarthy negatively and to assist the audience in comprehending the impact and distress simulated at that time. The music and lyrics projected throughout Good, Night and Good Luck adds to Clooney and Heslov’s concern of fear; this is presented through the use of Dianne Reeves jazz music, as a transition and mood setter. At the very beginning of the film, the sound of the 1958 banquet is silenced as the jazz music is played over the event. Reeves is often used as an audio cue for the viewer to enhance the current atmosphere; which is usually one of suspense and tension as often portrayed by the CBS employees.
